I am working with a mother of a 4 month old, admitted to the hospital for
chronic pulmonary infection related to a congenital abnormality. This
mother will be facing major surgery in the next few months. Her physician
has recomended applying acid mantle to her nipples to prevent yeast
problems, as she will be given antibiotics for an extended period. Is
anyone familiar with this product? I was unable to find any mention in Dr.
Hale or in Riordan and Auerbach. The pharmacist tells me this is OTC,
contains aluminum sulfate, calcium acetate, mineral oil, cetearyl alcohol,
glycerine, menthol, parabin, citric acid. My first thought was that this
would need to be removed before every feeding. Mother is unwilling to use
something without assurance that it is safe and compatible with nursing, so
I told her I would post for information.
Also, is anyone on the list in Boston or knowledgeable of Mass General?
This mother is planning to maintain her BF relationship even on a ventilator
with the help of her husband and mother. I would love to give her a
contact in Boston or let her know if the hospital has a lactation dept.
Thanks,
Lu Bush,RNC,IBCLC
