Lucy,
I have had clients breastfeed on one breast because of previous surgery
on the other breast, with no problems. The breast with the severed
ducts will become engorged, and then involute over the first week or
so. If only some ducts are severed, you might see an area of the breast
that cannot drain, and there will be engorgement in only that area.
Looks strange, but it clears up with a little time. Mom can use ice
compresses and/or cabbage leaf compresses on the affected area or
breast.
