information for clarity:
I observed the infant nursing, he did wonderful. Mom nursed him 20-25 on one
side until he fell asleep and would not resume nursing with coaxing. She then
switched sides and the infant nursed for about 10 minutes, the baby ended the
feeding. Mom and baby looked satisfied with the feeding ( this is what i mean
by he was content) The mom reports about 30-45 minutes after the feeding he
begins crying like he is in pain although I did not observe this at our
visit. This lasts until she feeds him again. I do not believe this is a
supply problem. He is to the breast at least q 3 hours for 30-50 minutes and
she is supplementing him with 1cc breast milk about 2 times per day because
mom percieves he is still hungry after the feeding. I think the problem is
maternal anxiety, exhaustion and lack of confidence. I was looking for
information on infants with CF and if they are prone to this kind of
behavior. This baby does not spit up much. The baby did not have surgery
after birth, it resolved with conservative therapy. The baby gets pancreatic
enzymes before each feeding. He also gets sodium supplements a couple times
per day. Mom puts the salt in a small amount of applesauce. This is what they
did in the NICU and the baby tolerated it fine. Thanks for all your questions
and input. Patty RN
