I have had an interesting email 'conversation' with a mum whose initial
query appeared to be about lactose intolerance, diagnosed by her
paediatrician. After further discussion about possible causes of this
'secondary lactose intolerance', she asked her paediatrician for more
explanation (because what she said that he had said didn't seem to make
sense to me). He has told her now that her baby's problem is intolerance
(ie lack of enzyme) to the oligosaccharides in human milk, and this occurs
in 1 in 20 babies. I thought this sounded rather a lot! He even mentioned
that there had been something in the paediatric literature recently about
this (on the Web as well).
Anyone else heard of this? Could it be something *like* this, but the
explanation has got changed in the translation somehow? I would love for
someone to shed light on what might be going on here.
