Carol, Thanks for your thoughtful post on Lithium. I am arguing this same
standpoint in my lectures to nurses and MDs. It is a bit of an uphill
battle...but, I am committed to the premise that where a mother suffers a
depressive disorder....breastfeeding can be very healing for her and protective
for her baby.
By protective I am not just talking about the immunology but also about the
bonding/ attachment issues that may have, in fact, precipitated the mom's
illness to begin with. For a mother who struggles with her own childhood
attachment issues...breastfeeding can be one of the greatest triumphs of her
life! (Just MHO)
