Barbara Wilson-Clay has made some good comments about this (as usual!).
I would add that some women I see with nipple pain will be using dummies b/c
they can't bear to allow the baby to stay on the breast as long as the baby
would like. So, some women who have been giving their babies dummies may
stop breastfeeding - but it wasn't the dummy that "caused" the problem. The
underlying problem is whatever is causing the nipple pain - use of a dummy
is only another "sign" of breastfeeding difficulties. I haven't examined
this research to work out if the researchers have taking these factors into
account.
