There may indeed be some symbolism to be found in Wagner's Ring.  I suppose
that if one searches he can find moral insight in Tosca too, but these
works have not survived on their symbols or their insights.  They survive
because of glorious music.  Few operas exist which, if stripped of their
music, are worth watching or reading for their literary or moral insights.
I mentioned a few weeks ago that Mozart's Cosi is so ridiculous that I
can't stand to watch it, but the music, ah, the music. . . .  Actually, I'm
even more extreme than that.  I find I seldom remember an opera's story or
plot.  I love opera, but for me most of the plot and words are merely
necessary but unimportant theatrical devices which provide a vehicle for
wonderful music, sung, I hope, by voices to match the music.  If the music
isn't great, nothing else will save the opera.
