Dear wonderful people:
A mother of triplets gave me some details of what she learned was effective.
One was to keep a log of feeding, diaper changes, medications etc. etc. This
became the baby book for the triplets and prevented situations like the one
where the mother changed one baby twice, one baby once, and one baby not at
all.
This mother cue-fed her babies one on one for the first few months to get
intimate time with each. She estimated that she was feeding 24-30 times a day!
After that first few months, if one got hungry, she woke the others to feed so
that she could have some time when she wasn't feeding. She would nurse two,
hold one off with a finger, then nurse the 3rd on both breasts. She reported a
nipple soreness from so much use and described dreading feeds at rare times,
although she was helped to sustain the commitment to breastfeeding by her
knowledge as a pediatrician, by her husband, and by her extensive support
network of friends, family, and church. She breastfed the triplets for nearly
a year. And mothered two older children. Warmly, Nikki Lee
