i am reminded by the butter story that i often hear a story about a baby whose
rate of weight gain has slowed (or stopped) along about 3 or 4 months or
later, and the usual recommendation from the doctor or whoever is "feed
cereal." not only do i discourage this, i tell moms to skip the cereal
altogether. the reasoning for no cereal when weight gain is a problem is that
it is LOW CALORIE, which probably means my entire diet should consist of that
junk mixed with water. the idea is that feeding a baby a low calorie food
displaces higher calorie food, like breastmilk. i have seen a baby lose weight
after cereal was introduced, which makes things seem worse. so as usual, it
ain't breastfeeding alone causing problems, there is usually some other factor
when solids are also given.
