<< Help. Is there any medication out there that helps moms letdown to a pump?
Used to be syntocinon, but that is not available anymore, at least not where
I live. Thanks. Loni Denman, RN, IBCLC >>
I have had Moms to ask a compounding pharmicist to make the oxytocin nasal
spray. ( I called him in advance and explained that occasionally a Mom needs
this and it is no longer available. He has been a Bfing Dad and was very glad
to provide this service). I also worked with a mom whose hubby was a MD and
he just mixed it for her by using an oxytocin ampule and saline nasal spray.
I don't know the mixture ratio but the pharmacist can get it.
I have had alot of moms be successful in letting down while pumping by using
something that smells like a baby. I used baby shampoo and to this day ( I
haven't lactated in 7 yrs) when I smell baby shampoo I sometimes feel a
letdown. I don't produce milk but I " tingle" sometimes. I have a mom who
opens a small plastic container of baby detergent flakes and lets the smell
float into the air. I also encourage moms to use all their senses in
stimulating a letdown. I encourage them to record the baby sounds that a baby
makes when rooting and listen to that, look at the baby picture, close their
eyes while massaging their breasts and visualizing milk letting down and the
baby nursing, and leaning over and letting gravity pull the milk down in
their breasts. Also if at work, play soft music which helps to drown out "work
noises" in the background. I have one Lactation room at a factory which
encourages the Moms to run the water in the sink at a slow trickle to
stimulate a letdown. The Moms all laugh and say they have to be sure to use
the bathroom first!!!
