Dear Dr. Leibovich,

I can sympathize with your situation. I have been invited to speak at a
Native American WIC Conference. The suggested topic: Contraindications
to Breastfeeding. I agreed, but I said I would challenge the current
thoughts/opinions on weaning/discontinuing breastfeeding and give a
balanced view of why breastfeeding is the best method.

I am planning to list specific situations where formula is commonly
given (jaundice, hypo/hyperglycemia, etc.) and to encourage
breastfeeding in these same situations.

By including sound medical advice on weaning, I hope to educate the
audience to take a more mother-friendly approach, which will trickle
down to moms who *really* need this advice. Current information on
weaning techniques, whether abrupt or gradual is good tool for family
practitioners to have and you may win over some hard-line formula
believers.

Good luck!
