I've repeatedly heard Knappertsbusch doing Bruckner per one of our
local classical music radio stations here. Labels aren't revealed, so
that I never knew there was any such thing as that Melodram set. And, yes,
the recordings did sound long in the tooth but, allowing for that, the
renderings were very good. Should have been. Knappertsbusch was steeped
in the performance customs and had an awesome self-confidence that went
hand-in hand with spontaneity. Maybe that's the way to approach Bruckner.
Another longtime Munich conductor, Celibidache, also did fine Bruckner,
also knew the performance customs, also had spontaneity, but he unlike
Knappertsbusch rehearsed that spontaneity, while Knappertsbusch, by
reputation anyway, rehearsed as little as was decently possible. Here in
Munich he-- his memory, that is-- is still big stuff (though not necessarily
for his politics).
