I, too, had severe preeclampsia and HELLP with my first child,blowing my
birth plan to smithereens. Fortunately, I was given fair notice by the
hospital IBCLC that lactation might be delayed. Still, she got no water, no
formula. As sick as I was, my friends on the nursing staff arranged for me
to remain a patient on the obstetric floor, instead of the SICU, where Janie
couldn't have been with me. I felt the milk surge on day 7. I had great
support--absolutely necessary as my eyes were so swollen I couldn't even see
her, much less latch her on! Once the milk was in, though, my supply was
fine.
