Jane,
Here is the best ever Health Fair idea I've come across:
A friend and colleage LC (she may be on Lactnet - if so, you know who you
are! Please speak up and take credit!) took the book, "We Like to Nurse" by
Chia Martin, cut the pictures out and glued them onto plywood. Each
picture then was cut to make a 2 piece jig-saw puzzle. The way the
pictures fit together, each nursing mother-baby animal pair could be
"latched on" to put the puzzle together. The pieces were then mixed up on
the table. Only the correct mother-baby pair would fit together.
I can tell you, it is difficult for either adults or children to keep from
wanting to manipulate the puzzle pieces to attach each baby to its correct
mother. It is the most satisfying feeling to put these pieces right!
Behind the table, the LC had a big poster she had made about mothers' milk
being species specific. She reported that her exhibit was the most popular
at the health fair, and that people kept returning to play with the puzzles
and to talk with her about breastfeeding.
The book which was the source of the pictures is "We Like to Nurse" by Chia
Martin, illustrated by Shukyo Lin Rainey, Hohm Press, 1995.
(ISBN 0-934252-45-9.) It shows 14 animal pairs nursing in bright, flat
colors, ending with a human mother and baby.
The trouble is that it is relatively expensive to cut up.
