Dear Lactnetters,
Just thought I'd share some good news! New Mexico now has a Right to
Breastfeed Law. This bill was one of the first bills the governor
signed. Of course, it is NOT illegal to breastfeed in public, but it is
now illegal to harass or discriminate against any woman who does
breastfeed her baby in public or in private.
We organized a "Breastfeeding Awareness Day" at our state capitol and
talked to many people. The bill was very direct and simple. We made
countless phone calls and sent out numerous press releases but I believe
that sitting though the committee hearing for 6+ hours while nursing a
toddler was the selling point (there wasn't even any discussion, the
legislators just watched my son nurse!) and now the bill is a success!
Thanks to all who helped make this bill into a reality.
