Thank you for your replies. Here's more info to answer your questions. The
mom was waking and feeding the baby every 21/2 hours from discharge until the
doctor said that the baby was gaining well and the night feeding could be
eliminated. This baby has always been happy to feed or not feed. I had the
mom alternate BF and supplements because the baby was starting to anticipate
the suppmlements and shorten the BFs. It didn't seem appropriate to not
supplement or only supplement with expressed milk since the baby was very
hungry. She wiggled constantly while at the breast except in the AM when the
mom's breast were full from not feeding all night. She also had her fingers
in her mouth constantly. The mom's period returned whil the baby still had a
good weight gain. Her official infertility diagnosis was polycystic ovary
syndrome. The other scenario that I have wondered about is that perhaps the
mom had a huge supply initially that would let down on it's own and the baby
survived without having to work very hard. Or she was working hard but not
stimulating a further supply because the mom's sinuses are farther back that
normal.
The second one doesn't make as much sense to me because as she got older and
her mouth grew I would think the problem would self correct.
Enough rambling! Any help is appreciated.
