KB asks about listeria on veg and on stuff other than dairy - the
government food safety advice we get in the UK (which tends, IMHO, to err
on the side of rather unnecessary caution - for instance, babies under a
year are not supposed to have eggs unless they have been boiled rock-hard
because of salmonella) is that listeria can be on anything, and you should
always wash stuff thoroughly. What we call cook-chill food is also supposed
to be at risk of harbouring listeria (the ready-to-eat meals you get from
the cold counter in supermarkets), as is blue-veined cheese and soft
unpasteurised cheese and pate.
Pregnant women are officially warned not to eat these things, but there's
never been any suggestion that bf women should steer clear, of course,
though I have certainly been asked 'is it all right for me to eat camembert
now I am breastfeeding?'
