Get her to a breast surgeon immediately. I posted some time ago about a
mom we saw who was three weeks postpartum with similar sx. Was NOT
breastfeeding but had engorgement on one breast. She was admitted to the
hospital on IV antibiotics since her OB suspected a breast infection.
One of our Lcs actually started her pumping (long story, I'd rather not
go there). Since i worked part time, saw her on day 2 of her hospital
stay and immediately charted my suspicions and spoke with the Dr. It did
not feel like any engorgement I've ever felt. To make a long story
short, she had inflammatory breast cancer and had a mastectomy within a
short time. Check the archives as well as back issues of JHL for an
article by Binky (ellen) petok on this topic.
Also thanks everybody for sharing the bfing after c/s info with me. yes,
I am well aware of LLL materials as I have been a Leader for almost 18
years.(Currently APL and Bf ing Peer Counselor Administrator as well as
a hospital based LC) But I need something short and sweet with pictures
and low literacy. My patients are not always highly educated, even in
their native language and it is a struggle for me sometimes to speak in
terms they understand.
