Hi, folks: Thanks to all those who gave me valuable input on the highly
allergic baby. Thankfully, the mother has continued to breastfeed and the
child has improved significantly (to the point where the colonoscopy has
been postponed). I'll keep you posted.
I have a new question. I got a call from a woman who is 38 weeks
gestation and has been diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome in the past
couple of years. She had breastfed her 5-year-old, but that was prior to
her onset of symptoms and diagnosis of Sjogren's. She is on no
medications as her symptoms are mild. She read in some newsletter about
the condition that she should not breastfeed because the autoiummune
antibodies could be passed to the baby. Of course, I strongly doubt that,
and I asked her to get me the references, but in the meantime I told her I
would find out what I could. The archives only have the issues of whether
or not Sjogren's can decrease milk supply and whether or not the
medications are safe. There's nothing about this specific question. Any
ideas? Has anyone worked with a mother with this condition? TIA, Alicia
Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
