I have to admit that this is the most unusual BF problem I've ever
had...the KC Zoo called me and wanted help locating a breast pump for a
mother chimpanzee. Mama Chimp is currently nursing a 5-yr old and the
chimp keepers would like to give her a 2-month old (whose own mother
rejected her) to nurse. Mama is having her annual physical this week
and they would like to obtain a milk sample to analyze since the head
zoo vet is concerned that Mama's milk won't support growth of the
2-month old. They asked about Reglan and I gave them the basic info; I
suggested fenugreek, but would they extrapolate dosage based on average
weights of nursing humans to the weight of Mama Chimp (that's what I
suggested)? I would think that Mama could successfully tandem nurse
even though she isn't the 2-month old's birth mother (similar to an
adoptive human mother who tandem nurses?).
If you can help, please e-mail Diane Roberts at the KC Zoo directly.

Primarily address the milk composition concern of the head vet and the
fenugreek dose for upping Mama Chimp's supply. I did get her a pump
since hand expression didn't seem to be a good option for Diane. And I
now wonder if I should donate some of *my* milk for supplementing with
now since human babies are given cow, goat, soy, etc. substitutes :-).
Hmmm...
Thanks for your wisdom and help!
