The May issue of Child magazine has a cover story on sleep methods with
infants. The author starts out by telling how she used the Ferber method
and how well it worked. (It always amazes me that how well it works is the
only criteria people seem to use when evaluating the Ferber sleep method.
There are lots of drugs that would work well, too, but I'm sure they
would never consider that.)
If she hadn't told you that she used the Ferber method, some readers might
not pick up on her prejudice when she compares Ferber's method and the
Sears/shared sleep approach. When quoting Sears she uses terms like "he
insists" or "he concedes." She doesn't do this with Ferber. She also
gives some confusing or wrong information about sleeping with a baby- like
not to use bean bags or comforters in the bed. Who sleeps on bean bags?
It might not be good to put a newborn face down on a fluffy comforter, but
this makes it sound like you can't cover them up with anything warm. She
also states that rolling over and suffocating the baby is only
occassionally (I don't have the article with me, so I'm not sure if that's
her exact word) a problem.
Write letters if this bothers you!
