The aims of this project are: (1) to characterize
the apoptosis-inducing molecules in human milk,
(2) to study the interactions of these components
with the host cells, (3) to elucidate the cellular
activation mechanisms which results in apoptosis
and the difference between resistant and sensitive
epithelial cells, and (4) to evaluate the anti-tumor
effect in vivo using tumor bearing mice.
Importance: Results so far demonstrate that
human milk contains factors which induces
apoptosis in immature cells and tumor cells but
not in mature, normal cells. The research may
help understand the biological effects of human
milk in the gastro-intestinal tract and elucidate
some differences between normal and tumor
cells.
