I saw the Lactnet post about daycare on site for teen mothers in school, but I
would like to see it taken it to the next step. LLLI had a speaker at a
Breastfeeding Specialist Workshop a few years ago and she talked about a high
school class where the mothers brought their babies right to a special
classroom just for them and their babies.
It is important for these girls to finish their education and learn to parent
at the same time. And the babies are so much happier with their mothers right
there, and it's important for the mothers to bond with these babies rather
than let others care for their children.
The speaker was herself once a teen mother who was now working with teen
mothers. She said one of the best things about getting a teen mother to
nurse is that it forces her to parent her own child and realize how important
she is to that child. She doesn't just pass the baby off to someone else.
She takes responsibility, and she and her baby greatly benefit.
