I've been getting so many E-mails on my recent post, I thought I'd
better answer to the list:
I agree, it is sad when administration thinks the more we give away the
better. I have to say, though, that their opinion is not unfounded.
Besides being an IBCLC, I also do alot of the O.B. marketing. I
coordinate all of the maternity tours, and go out to all the local
"health fairs", etc. I am amazed at the clients who ask about the
"goodies" they'll get. I have had alot of phone calls inquiring what we
give out, telling me that that is how they will choose their hospital.
I've had some come in for more than one tour, just to "get more stuff".
I've also dealt with irate clients who fully expected the hospital to
provde a months worth of diapers, formula and a car seat and crib to take
home.
Granted this doesn't apply to all our patients; we have a very diverse
population. Unfortunately, we are situated in the poorest section of
Washington, D.C., and as Rita said, some just want the diaper bag, etc.
I'm trying to convince administration that going Baby Firendly will
market to a different type of client. But unitl the savy, educated ones
start to speak up, the uneducated ones one will simply out number them,
and the ":goodie" ploy will continue to work.
By the way, we do give out more than our competiors, and our market
share went up last year. I hope this was a coincidence.
Finally, to Marsha, thanks for the letter. I'll try to use it.
