I would proceed differently.  This amount of blood is not big deal,
especially if the baby is otherwise healthy and well.

Use techniques (including breast compression) to increase the fat content of
the milk the baby is getting. (see handout on "colic in the breast fed baby"
and "breast compression" at the websites below)

Take the mother off dairy products.
