I have been wondering about administration of IV's in labor, especially
IV pitocin induction and postdelivery in relation to competition for
binding sites with ADH. I have observed excess tissue fluid in mothers'
feet and legs (even thigh high), and especially the breast, for 1-2 weeks
after delivery. Perhaps it is seen so often by OB's and other HCP they
think of it as the norm. I think It thereby complicates initiation of
breastfeeding. I wonder if births in other settings (home, birthing
centers, other cultures) without such interventions also lead to a
different effect in the breast.
If anyone knows of references on this subject, I am interested in reading
up on it.
