For the grandma whose teen daughter was told by her baby's ped that solids are
more important than nursing for a six-month-old (who is in the pink of health
and gaining great, with a Hgb of 10):
This doctor doesn't know about normal infant feeding! That's my unbiased
opinion. I bet the doctor's agenda is for the baby to wean by a year. That
was the pediatric "party line" before the December 1997 AAP statement came
out. You and your daughter could start with that statement if you need to
confront the doctor.
Somewhere I have a statement from WHO that says the the baby should be getting
at least half its calories from mom's milk when it turns a year old. So other
food is NOT more important until at least the second year. Maaaaybe the baby
could use some iron, but even there I'd just focus on iron-containing foods
rather than a supplement. Cut down on nursing???? No! Not if she wants the
baby to nurse for a NORMAL period (2 1/2 years plus).
Courage! Your daughter is doing a great job. She just ran into that old
obstacle---"conflicting information."
