Go get them!  This is one of those times where a parent has to stand up
for their child (I've found most teachers to be patronizing or
domineering offense meant- just my experience) and in so doing, model for
them how to be their own advocates.  The teacher told her it didn't have
to be nice, didn't she?  So your daughter has a different opinion.  She
put more work and research into that letter than most (or all of) the
kids in the class.  Or was the teacher's motive just to get free stuff?
Aren't the kids there to learn, not fund raise?
