This video has a *profoundly positive* impact here when shown to both
hcp and pregnant parents. We always make it clear that we expect the
mother to respond instinctively by helping her baby.
The two main messages this video helps us to convey:
1) Babies are not always ready to breastfeed *immediately* after birth.
This seems to be the expectation of parents and hcps. Thus babies are
given a 5 minute *chance* to breastfeed (wrapped in at least two terry
towels) before being taken away for such
important tasks as weighing etc.
2) Mothers and babies belong together - especially in that important
first hour at least - with *no* interference. Babies are *programmed*
to perform certain behaviours and any interventions/disturbance can
interfere with this. This video can help to instill a sense of respect
for the newborn and hopefully encourage a move away from *production
line* techniques.
