There are numerous ways this happens. It can begin as early as the first
prenatal visit, which is where I received formula samples from 4 different
companies. I was nano-seconds pregnant and they were already giving me
gifts! Of course I said yes so I could see what their pateints were
receiving.

Mothers can enroll in baby clubs that are advertised in parenting types of
magazines. You can also enroll for free gifts at your prenatal visits .

Of course, I also received a "breastfeeding support kit" upon discharge
with a sample can of Enfamil powder. Being a new mother had given me some
insight into the numerous ways formula companies market to new moms. I
knew nothing about the WHO code when I gave birth to my two older children
or the various ways formula companies market to new parents so I paid very
close attention to various marketing strategies this time around.

I voiced my opinions to both my obstetrician and pediatrician about their
practice of distributing formula gift packs and it's detriment to BF. Yet
I still see LOTS of Peter Rabbit diaper bags all over town.

Bottom line-no one is enforcing the WHO Code in the US. There is no
"punishment" for those who violate the Code. If this observation is
erroneous, let me know!

I have to agree that I'd rather see white fluid instead of Coke or Mountain
Dew in a baby bottle too.
