Just to update everyone on the details.
When the baby was initially feeding poorly I showed mom how
to break his suck completely to remove him then awakened
him by undressing him and some rocking motions in my arms.
I needed to check his red reflexes anyway to finish the exam I
had mostly done in the OR.
I told mom and dad about undresses, baby sit-ups and skin to
skin contact to wake him. (The things I learned in Western PA)
I gave him back to mom and encouraged a lot of skin to
skin contact.
I explained to the parents about potential slow starts after
C-sections and copious but necessary suctioning.
I calmly helped mom latch him on and hopefully gave
an impression of "I'm not worried so should you shouldn't be."
From there I left the IBCLC go to work.
