Here in the South, such things were called sugar tits. I've heard my mom refer
to them so apparently they were still around in the 20's and 30s. You just
soaked a piece of muslin in sugar water, tied it up and gave it to the baby.
Women may also have used a lump of sugar sometimes instead of the sugar water.
There are a couple of Sugar Tits on the map: Sugar Tit, Kentucky is near
Florence in Boone County and Sugar Tit, SC is a hamlet in Spartanburg County.
One of the residents -and there aren't many- of Sugar Tit SC is a sister LLL
Leader.
