to my LactNet friends....
Leila Marcial here, I survived my talk on Breastfeeding to my Public
Speaking class. The ONLY negative comments came from the Prof. I
have a sneaky suspicion that she did not BF her children.....
Her evaluation...
In your intro to your presentations you have to realte to your
audience - if you were speaking to a group of pregnant women then they
are already interested. But in speaking to the class you have to
relate the topic to a young group composed of men & women, so please
take some time to create a bond with the audience.
You related later in your speech to men - do it earlier
Some good confirmations
Good visuals but make sure you don't block them. (I made overheads,
but had ner used them before, and stood in front of them:).)
Good use of humor (I used Joan McCartney's drawings)
Better conclusion needed.
Speech A- Outline B+
So.....what did I talk about????
I mainly talked about the myths of breastfeeding, and the benefits. I
discussed our bottle feeding culture, and the use of breasts to SELL
EVERYTHING.
I discussed the part that the father plays in supporting and helping
the mother. How the mom needs support to be successful at
breastfeeding. I mentioned what the mom NEEDS to have a good
breastfeeding realtionship (how to make milk, no pain, where to go for
help, etc)& the new AAP recommendations. WHO Baby Friendly. The
working mom, and pumping and storage, and BF friendly employers :).
I also did mention breast implants, and the realtionship to future
breastfeeding, and Pamela Anderson, and they need extra help, but can
still do it.
What did I do wrong???? I don't know how I could've done it very much
different. I DID NOT preach to them, and cam right out and told them
that I wouldn't. I told them that I wanted them to have a better
understanding of the importance of BF. At the end I did tell them
about what they could do to encourage BF. Whent they see a BF mom in
public, to encourage her, to give her POSITIVE feedback or comments,
etc.......
I'm done for tonight.........
