Hi, all-
I agree with Elisheva. I recently had a consultation with a mother whose
goal was to breastfeed only four times a day. When she called to make the
appointment, she was very apologetic about her goal, and asked if I was still
willing to see her. She was VERY appreciative that I was willing to help her
to meet HER goal. Of course, I hope that by helping her to breastfeed
comfortably (she was in pain), she would decide she actually like BF and want
to BF more. And in the interest of helping her to make an informed decision,
I explained that the protection that her milk affords her baby is dose
dependent, and that since her milk supply was not well established, she may
not be able to make enough milk for those 4 feedings she wanted to retain.
That explained, she felt strongly enough about NOT BF that she still wanted to
BF only 4 times a day. My role?- to help her to do that comfortably and well.
Whose baby is it anyway has been a recent theme. The baby is mom's, of
course!
