Perhaps instead of smoking as an analogy for formula feeding we should
use a medication, perhaps an antibiotic. The overuse of antibiotics is
common both from consumer and health practitioners AND causes many
problems. One never really needs (in a medical sense) to smoke, but
these doctors do think some moms really need to feed formula for medical
reasons. Much as we believe in donor's milk, I don't think most of the
pediatricians or mothers I work with will buy into its use in these
baby's childhood. By using smoking (or other nasty imagery like crap,
slop, etc.) as an analogy I think we risk being dismissed out of hand as
exaggerating at best. This means nothing else we say will be heard and
we lose the chance to help. I still think we should present donor's
milk as the preferred 3rd feeding option and formula as the 4th.
