Pretty much standard for US hospitals. We used to have vigintiphobia among
HCPs (fear of 20 r/t bilirubin). We've pretty much traded that in for
"fear of 40" (whatever that word is) as related to glucose in newborns.
In some places it has become "fear of 50." I'm not sure what happened to
the research that said newborns average 30-40 glucose in first 24 hours
and that does not cause brain damage. Got lost in the numerical shuffle I
guess. You see in America we have to create problems that make birth in a
hospital a medical neccessity. After all birth is an incredibly difficult
event to get through without intervention. :-) Now that you all know how
warped American culture is, please don't hold it against us, however be
prepared because we export all of our crazy notions to the rest of the
world. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
