I don't understand how a long-time therapy for edema can be considered cutting
edge just because lactation consultant's have just recently begun to apply the
therapy to lactation practice. It was cutting edge 30 years ago or longer.
Now, it is just the obvious thing to do because we know so much more about
what engorgement is and what causes it.
There is nothing personal meant when a professional challenges the assumptions
of another professional with evidence. It is what, IMHO, we all should be
doing for each other and what a forum like this is all about.
As to always statements and never statements: I agree that getting stuck in
this rut is not productive but when a therapy is proven effective and another
is not we are not saying never do that therapy, just that it is unproven.
Maybe heat works in certain circumstances. Great! Is it proven for treatment
of edema. NO, it isn't. It is proven to be unhelpful and possibly harmful.
