Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hope you had a restful turkey day. I had a few
questions for you all. I haven't been doing consulting very long, so bear
with me. About how long does it take for a mother to notice a decrease in her
milk supply if she has been taking the mini-pill? I have seen 3 mothers in
the last 3 months who have been on the progestin only pill and have come to me
complaining they are producing less milk. There OB docs insist that it is NOT
the mini-pill causing the problem.
Second question involves a patient I have been working with for two weeks.
Had breast reduction surgery 15 years ago. Anchor scar. The baby has been a
great breastfeeder since birth. Now 2 weeks old. Mom is still not producing
much milk.
Before and after weights reflect anywhere from 10-20 cc per feeding. She has,
of course, been supplementing. Baby has continued to nurse and she offers
breast first. She is on fenugreek and blessed thistle and she pumps in
addition to feedings four times a day (I suggested at least 6). How long does
it take to see an increase in her supply? She is beginning to get
discouraged. Baby is gaining 1/2 ounce per day. Thanks for your continued
support and responses to my many questions. Loni Denman, RN, IBCLC
