I have posted previously about a mom who had ductal yeast treated with GV, OTC's,
and finaly fluconazole. Baby is now 91/2 mos. Still has painful nipples. Nipples
appear to have skin slough and slight redness. Nothing very bad looking. Mom
describes the feed as painful start to finish, but not the burning/stabbing pain
she felt with the yeast. Recently with what sounded like superficial bleeding
(from skin, not duct). Is now going to try dermatologist. (has been through
OB,Surgeon, ID) Although is not very hopeful of finding help. So far no-one has
been very surpportive or motivated to help find answers. The MD's are always quick
with the suggestion to stop bf and even baby's pedi suggested supplementing with
formula as opposed to working with mom or encourage her efforts at continuing bf.
This mom is very motivated and does not want to wean. Whenever pain is especially
bad there is also drop in supply which I am guessing if mostly do to pain
response. For that she is already on fenugreek/blessed thistle and pumping. I
would be greatful for any suggestions/opinions. Lot's of info available on sore
nipples in the newborn period. Haven't been able to find anything very helpful for
the older nursling.
Thanks in advance,
Paula Caputo, RN
