Pat, I did this with my second and third children, since my first was so sensitive
to dairy. I also continued to eliminated almost all dairy from my diet during the
first year they nursed.
My  son - the firstborn - still has strong reactions to dairy at 23 years of age.
He was given a bottle of cow's milk formula in the nursery against my express
wishes and without my knowledge when he was less than 24 hrs old.
With the two girls, we were able to keep them away from dairy till after they were
2 yrs old. They are now 17 and 21 yrs old, and can tolerate small amounts of dairy
- although the younger one is a vegan, and chooses not to for ethical reasons. I
know that this is anecdotal, but every little bit helps :)
