An LC called today with an urgent dilemma. She is working with a mom of 26
weeker preemie twins. They are receiving .7cc of half expressed breast milk /
half Similac Special Care formula (24 calorie) per hour continuous feed. The
mom has to leave and return to her family in a distant rural area and will be
away for 11 days. The NICU nurse had already mixed the ounces of breast milk
with equal amounts of formula. It then dawned on her that unless she can
freeze this mixed EBM/formula, she has wasted the EBM the mom has left.

So.....the question is.....can this half/half mixture be frozen in small
quantities and used over the next few days until the mom can deliver more?
Or, should the formula part of this mixture NOT be frozen, thus ruining the
the mixture?

This is all the info she has given me, but we can gather any other facts we
need. Please respond as soon as possible and thanks for considering this.
