Dr. Wight,
While waiting for your reply I talked with my midwife and she agreed that
if the baby were lower there would be a risk of anemia but that she
places the baby on the abdomen which in a squatting woman is not lower
than the baby (as she did with me.) She also waits for the cord to stop
pulsing on it's own, usually within 5 minutes. The only exception is
with RH neg mothers.
She also quit suctioning babies 15 years ago and does feel there is a
direct correlation between it and latching problems.
I am also not surprised at your comment of not having seen a natural
birth. Would you like to? My midwife (Diane Smith) told me she would
love to take you to a home birth with her so you could see for yourself.
Since we are all in the San Diego area this would be quite possible. She
is a licensed midwife, in practice for 23 years and has delivered in
excess of 2,000 babies. I will pass info on how to contact her via
private e-mail.
Adele Delgado,
Santa Ysabel, Ca.
