There has been much interest in the "study" to start next week in
Khayelitsha. I have been in contact with Dr Nils Bergman (the Kangaroo
man) who has been present at some of the planning meetings and Prof Dave
Woods who is involved in this programme. It is being called a
"monitored clinical project" and not a research study because there are
huge sensitivities which have yet to be overcome.
There has been put in place an extensive monitoring exercise, which
should provide some answers. One area that has not been covered is that
of the effect on breastfeeding of HIV negative mothers. There will be
particlular emphasis for them to breastfeed, but no monitoring, and
measuring of the "spillover effect".
Prof Woods is happy to correspond with anyone who is interested and I
have given his email address to those who have contacted me privately.
Hopefully they can keep us all informed as their particular questions
and concerns are addressed.
Best wishes for a wonderful 1999!
