i am really impressed that so many of you find time for guerilla tactics at
the bookstore, but, although part of me feels glad that you have gotten rid of
the "bad books" (and believe me i think the baby wise stuff is as bad as
everyone else), you are treating the symptom and not the cause. it's called
censorship, and as long as people are receptive to the stuff and are ignorant
enough of the alternatives to buy these books, they will be available. we
need to be trying to change the society that produces this stuff, not the end
result.
no one is going to let a baby scream alone in the dark just because they read
a book that says it is okay. they are going to let the baby scream because
there is something fundamentally unknowing about them that is just confirmed
by the book. when i had my first child, i picked him up whenever he cried. i
hadn't read dr. sears yet, but even if every single book on the market had
said to let your baby cry, i wouldn't have done it. i would have just written
the book that said not do.
of course, when lactnetters open their own bookstores, there will only be
"good" books on the shelf.
