<<About food elimination and colic. Dairy tends to be the most common culprit.
I
always start with that and ask a mom if she or the baby's father have any food
allergies/sensitivities.>>
Odd what the various experiences of LC's with colic and the diet issues are.
In our clinic we only see a handful of babies per year who react to something
in mom's diet.
First step in our clinic is to look at oversupply syndrome which by our
estimates (since 1989) is approximately 95% of all colic.
Second about 2% is food sensitivities but here it seems that prenatal
vitamins are the culprit more often than milk. We have noticed a correlation
between the amount of milk intake (fluid milk and ice cream) in pregnancy and
sensitivity later on. If mom has a high milk intake in pregnancy of more than
1 quart, eliminating milk helps. Next is citrus or nuts.
Another 2% seem to be colicky moms. You know the type, nervous, over achievers
on the go all the time; who never seem to let the baby set his own feeding
schedule.
The remaining 2% are those who have neurogenic type colic and we recommend
both PT/OT and chiropractic care.
