A risk factor listed on the packaging of most corticosteroid medications is
suppression of normal immune response, and the potential for fungal
over-growth. I hurt my neck once, and got a whopping shot of cortisone
followed by a 7 day oral dose (descending doses of cortisone by tablets).
By the 3rd day of treatment, I woke up with oral thrush. It made my mouth
hurt, everything tasted metallic, and since I was traveling, I couldn't ph.
my doctor. I recalled the old LLL advice to rinse out the mouth with a very
dilute solution of baking soda and water. I mixed up a rather STRONG
solution and gargled several times for several hours. This took care of the
thrush. Norma Ritter's mom on maintenance doses of prednisone may simply be
super prone to yeast due to the suppression of the immune response. I don't
know what the solution is, but this may be the explanation.
