<<migratory osteoporosis. It apparently has many other names as
well....transient
(or painful) bone marrow edema, transient osteoporosis of the hip. It develops
during the 3rd trimester and resolves after delivery. Her bone scan showed so
much damage/thinning of the bone especially in her right hip that she is
wheelchair bound to help prevent fractures.>>

First a question for our medical people: What is hormonally or physiologically
different about the third trimester and lactation that would make this
disorder appear in the 3 rd trimester as opposed to earlier in pregnancy? If
it is directly related to pregnancy, wouldn't she have developed it with the
previous pregnancy as well? Or is it related to the number or closeness of
pregnancies? I know some animals loose bone mass if pregnancies are too
frequent or too great in number (I have seen this type of syndrome in dogs
particularly those on breeding farms)

I know quite a bit about bone health (most of you know what I went through
last year) Two of my children were nursed through my previous hip
replacements. My orthopedist said lactation had absolutely nothing to do with
bone health.
Anyway, my x rays last month showed growth of NEW BONE in an area that was
fractured in the hip replacement/revision surgery nearly 18 months ago. All
the growth occurred in less than a 3 month period. My orthopedist was amazed.
First thing he asked was "What are you doing different?"
A friend who is REALLY in to mineral therapy asked that I try supplementing
with a different form of calcium & magnesium, then I was taking and adding
selenium and gelatin to my daily routine. I didn't think it would work but
figured I had nothing to loose anyway. Well it worked not only do I feel
better but I have xrays to prove it.
I have always taken calcium supplements because I can't stand milk. However
these capsules are a liquid calcium and magnesium supplement derived from
plant sources. The 'selenium plus' capsules provide several trace minerals.
Shark cartilage was suggested to me several times by my doctor but I refuse to
take it because of the way it is harvested. The gelatin is supposed to help my
joints like shark cartilage would. I don't know if its the combination of
stuff that helped but I am convinced that for me, the calcium from plant
sources if far more usable than the other types of supplements I was taking.
For what it's worth, perhaps this mom should look into other mineral sources
to help build up the bone she lost during this pregnancy before considering
weaning.
