Winona County Community Health Department
Winona, Minnesota
I had two breastfed children, neither one ever made any charts as
infants or children. So I was always being pushed to offer supplements,
start solids and so on.
Both children weighed 18 pounds at one year and 25 pounds when they
started kindergarden.
My son is now 25 and 6'2" and 160# and my daughter is 17 and 5'4" and
weighs 110 pounds.
So sometimes it seems they just want to blame breastfeeding. My son's
doctor was the worst, it was in the era when they started cereal
practically at birth and when I was still exclusively breastfeeding at 6
months, he told me that my child was likely to be retarded if he didn't
start solids immediately. This is helpful to me now in my job since I
get less excited about growth charts than almost anyone since I never
had a child on one for either height or weight.
