I think that I agree, that there are things happening with this mom that I
am not fully aware of. She got pregnant after she agreed to host and run
this huge 800 person conference, happening Wed. Outwardly, she does not
appear really stressed. The kid has a weak suck, and was circ'd on day 2,
causing further drawing in, and disinterest in sucking well and nutritively.
I fax'd the doctor, who will see her today, and suggested a temporary period
of lots of nursing, with formula supplements by bottle, or whatever the mom
wants to use, to get his calories up..and to FEED THE BABY....do I hear an
echo around here? Hasn't someone just said that? : )
Rule #1 Feed the baby ..still holds.
I have rec'd this advice from several of you, to encourage supplements
however and whenever and in plentiful amounts, and I am going with that. I
did fax this to MD. We'll see what he says. This practice, by the way, sees
me as a bf fanatic. Not a helpful image, but we'll see.
I see no signs of infection, although that was a good idea, and thanks for
suggesting it.
I don't know what will happen. He was a good sized baby, approx. 8 lb at
birth, dropped a lb when I saw him.
The worst thing about being an LC around here is that I am the LAST RESORT.
I usually have one shot at things, and then I end up having my input mixed
with many other sources of information, some of which may not be accurate,
ie from the office nurse who is not apprised of current bf literature, etc.
Sigh. I also find that much of the followup work is intense, and time
consuming, and yet it is not paid for.
Does anyone charge for weight checks, f/u phone consults, etc, ? I usually
don't charge for f/u phone work, and I talk to clients each day until things
go well.
what do others do? I am not interested in amounts being discussed,
(*although if you want to, please do it privately)...but I am interested in
how people handle the f/u work that often ensues after these train wreck cases.
