I recently watched on video *Smilla's Sense of Snow*. In it Smilla has
a flash back to being with her mother on a seal hunt. Her mother is a
native huntress in Iceland. The mother is shown cutting open a seal's
abdomen and removing something (liver?). Five/six year old Smilla waits
on the dogsled, watching expectantly while the mother shares the seal
meat with the other adults on the hunt. The mother returns to Smilla on
the dogsled, sits down and lifts up her sealskin parka so Smilla can
nurse! There was no mistaking the mother's breast and Smilla's nursing.
